Having started in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo, Kyoto, Jidai Matsuri is one of the three greatest festivals in Kyoto. A pageant of 2000 participants in traditional costumes reflecting each historical scene march in a 2-kilometer line. They start from Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace) at noon and march to Heian Jingu shrine through Karasuma Oike, Kyoto City Hall and Sanjo Keihan Station.
