The festival has been celebrated for over 1000 years. It is said to have originated with a sacred halberd which was found floating in the water not far from Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, where the 10th century scholar and warrior Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined. When the halberd landed, a feast was organized and a Shinto purification ceremony was held.
